Decker Kitchen Remodel-1500

Kitchen Remodeling: Why Design/Build?

You may have heard that remodeling a kitchen can be a daunting task and quite an expensive endeavor. But imagine for a moment what a remodeled kitchen can mean to your family, and to the value of your home. We’ve implemented a proven process of getting through any type of interior remodeling project requiring large amounts of decisions and detail.

The best part about Scott Hall Remodeling is that the design and build is all under one roof. You don’t have to rely on some contractor you nothing about installing your kitchen just because it’s the showroom’s guys. Some showrooms will even bid out installation work and don’t necessarily guarantee their workmanship. The last thing you want is product incorrectly installed. In our case, your designers and those installing your kitchen all work for the same company and we never shy away from accountability. You can rest assured we’ll stand behind our work, and if something goes wrong, it’s on us. You can be sure we’ll be in touch with you about any problems we encounter. You won’t get that with just any showroom or big-box store.

What’s Wrong with “Budget” Kitchen Design Centers?

While there are plenty of “budget” options out there for stock cabinetry and countertops, when it comes to kitchens, you don’t ever want to cut corners.  The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in any home, so you don’t want to sacrifice quality just for the sake of price point. While a lot of budget kitchen design showrooms may claim that their product is just as good as semi-custom or custom options, you will find that the options present may not fit what you really need.

For those wondering what the difference between stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinetry are, we will explain. Stock cabinets are cabinets that do not have additional options built into them. Semi-custom cabinets are essentially stock cabinets, but they can be adapted depending on situations with various dimensional adjustments and organizational options. Custom cabinets are just that – customized for the exact need you’re looking for. Some showrooms will try to push a complete custom line on you, and while in some situations having a complete kitchen of custom cabinets is perfectly fine, it doesn’t fit into a lot of budgets.

When dealing with a kitchen showroom, whether they are “budget” or not, you are given only a few options. It’s likely that your kitchen situation may require certain dimensions of cabinetry that they don’t have in stock. These sorts of showrooms are about selling cabinetry, not walking you through the process of what is actually best for you and your home. While some of these showrooms may have good designers, there isn’t the guarantee that you’ll get the kitchen you’re really looking for in the end.

Why Avoid Big Box Stores?

Big-box stores are often all about just selling as much cabinetry as they can. While you may run into a good designer in one of these stores, they’re just as limited by the design options available for the stock lines as much as you would be. Sure, they can get creative, but you’re still limited by whatever products are offered. The kitchen is one of the parts of your home where you really don’t want to get stuck with only a few options and be forced to make choices you really don’t want to have to make.

Also, with big box stores, it’s hard to say who will be installing your kitchen. Sometimes, that job is performed by employees of the particular big-box chain, but in some areas, it’s not, and there isn’t always a satisfaction guarantee. Big box stores are out to just make the most profit that they can on often lower-end products purchased in bulk on the cheap. That isn’t what you want for your kitchen.

Why Design/Build?

This is where hiring a Design/Build remodeling firm differs greatly from those types of companies. At Scott Hall Remodeling, we have developed a five-phase Design/Build process for every project that we do. Some of the benefits of this process include:

  • From concept through design and building, we take you through every step of the way
  • Talented design experts with the product and design knowledge to work with your individual situation and style
  • Anticipating any problems that may arise and helping you make the right decision when unforeseen issues may arise
  • With Scope Development inherent in the Design/Build philosophy, you can stay in budget while sacrificing the least amount of your needs and wants to fit your budget
  • Be presented with far more options than budget kitchen showrooms and big box stores could ever provide
  • Not have particular lines or products pushed on you to meet sales quotas

You may be surprised how far you can stretch a kitchen remodeling budget by using stock cabinetry in areas that can use it, while mixing in semi-custom and custom options in the areas of your design that would be best suited for it. While it sounds odd to mix and match cabinetry in that way, door styles can be matched on the semi-custom and custom lines to match the stock cabinets.

We will help you find only the best products for your budget and situation. If we feel we can mix and match with other options while staying in budget, we will present these options to you. It’s the same situation with countertops – there are many different countertop options on the market, not only the granite and laminate you may see often. When it comes down to lighting options, sinks, faucets, and other considerations, we’ll also be closely involved in the decision-making process. We’ll even help you select appliances if need be.

6 Family Focused Reasons for a Finished Basement

finished-basement-family-room

You may have been thinking about finishing your basement for some time, but didn’t know where to start. Here are 6 reasons that our clients consider a finished basement for their homes.

Reason #1: Increase Your Home’s Living Space

More square footage and breathing room for your family is a huge advantage. It helps that having a finished basement increases home value, too. But while a lot of people may focus on the resale value of having a finished basement, the emotional value is probably even greater. Just knowing that having more breathing space, especially if you have a good sized family, definitely makes you feel a lot more comfortable.

Reason #2: Entertainment

Now it’s easier to have your friends over, or your kids’ friends over. It means that you can entertain more guests than you ever have before, especially if you add a bathroom to your finished basement. Even a half-bath is a huge boon. Who wants to keep going upstairs to go to the bathroom, and who wants to wait in line?

Reason #3: Room for Extended Family

Having the in-laws over a lot? Well, now if you have a finished basement, especially if it’s well-furnished with an extra bedroom, you can invite your extended family over much more often. With all of the adult kids being forced to have to live at home these days because of the economy, it’s also a great way to give them a way to have some space of their own.

Yes, this is what a finished basement can look like.

Yes, this is what a finished basement can look like.

Reason #4: Renting Out?

This one builds off of Reason #3. Many finished basements over the years have actually gone as far to turn the basement into its own fully-equipped living area, complete with full bathroom and kitchen and bedroom/living area. Perhaps you have a family member that needs a place to live, but would rather live somewhat independently – this works out great.

Having a complete finished basement like that also allows you to actually rent out that space, especially if you know someone that has a decent income, but can’t afford a place of their own. It’s great to have a house within a house and the resale value of a home with two complete kitchens is pretty high. But it’s good to know you have the option to give someone a place to live while earning a little extra income, as well. It’s not an option you have to consider, but it is a major consideration.

Reason #5: Bring Order to Chaos

Many unfinished basements become extremely cluttered over the years due to the fact that many families stack up things down there that they want out of the way on the main floors. But by finishing your basement, you can create more organized storage areas with proper shelving and cabinetry. Well-insulated and more organized storage spaces mean less clutter around your main floors, while also not worrying about the environmental effects that storing items in unfinished basements could cause.

Reason #6: Comfort

This may be one of the best reasons for finishing your basement. Well-insulated basements happen to be coolest place in your home during summer and the warmest in winter. Cool, I mean, cozy, huh? It’s good to have a safe haven during the hottest or coldest days of the year, while also allowing you to save a bit on heating and cooling costs.

If one or more of these 6 reasons have convinced you to finish your basement, Scott Hall Remodeling is happy to discuss your situation. Whether you’re looking to build a better storage space with some extra living space, an entertainment area, or a complete apartment down in your basement, we’ll help you to realize it.

With our Design/Build process, we can help you design and construct the finished basement that you’re looking for – from complete apartment-type basements complete with bath and kitchen to the more ordinary entertainment areas. If you’re just looking for a couple extra bedrooms or need a downstairs office, we’re up for that, too. Whatever it is you’re looking for, with our design experts and talented artisans, Scott Hall Remodeling is your one-stop shop for basement remodeling!

An Award-Winning Performance for Scott Hall Remodeling

Scott Hall of Scott Hall Remodeling recently received the Best Bath Award from NARI (The National Association of the Remodeling Industry) in their 2014 Home Improvement Showcase. Here are the reflections of the homeowner whose home was involved in the project:

This was not our first remodeling project, so we have some previous experiences to make comparisons, including a project with one of the biggest remodeling companies in Central Ohio. This master bathroom was a complex project because there were structural issues that needed to be addressed before Scott Hall Remodeling could approach the remodeling itself.  Also, we, the home owners, were not present during much of the process because we live in Traverse City, Michigan.

We were delighted with the communication with Scott and his Professional Remodeling Team.  Every project has some issues arise and no contractor likes to have to discuss problems with the homeowner that might entail delays in the work or additional expenses.  We greatly appreciated it that Scott’s team didn’t hesitate to inform us of any issues immediately and assist us in making decisions. Their years of experience provided them with the knowledge of not only how to fix the challenges that arose, but how to explain the options to us in an understandable manner.

Current technology certainly made communication easier.  The team could call, text or e-mail us and include photos of the construction or of paint colors or of completed work or of optional products.  The distance made little difference.  Their dedication to keeping us informed made all the difference and a notable contrast to a company we dealt with previously.

All-in-all, I would highly recommend Scott Hall Remodeling for remodeling work. We feel that we received a quality remodel with so much attention to detail and support from the staff.

Here at Scott Hall Remodeling, we pride ourselves on our attention to detail and our dedication to keeping homeowners in the loop with every aspect of their projects. With our process, we stay in touch about every little thing that might affect your project. We stand with you from the initial concept of your project, through every design detail, and product selections. Then when it comes to the actual building of your project, we keep you informed of our progress and any delays that may occur. We strive to make sure that everything comes out just the way that’s expected to be.

We’ve dealt with many challenges in projects over the years and we have the experience and expertise to help you make the best decisions for your project. We’re happy to announce that not only will we continue to do the bathroom projects that we have become known for, but we’ll also be adding kitchen remodeling and finished basements to our repertoire. Scott Hall Remodeling looks forward to serving Central Ohio residents for many years to come.
